MARY ELOISE DOUGHTIE

1915 ~ 2016

Victoria- Mary Eloise Wilson Doughtie, 101, was born in Sinton, Texas on August 15, 1915 to Bryant Hugh and Eugenia Read Wilson. She passed away August 21, 2016.
Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and our angel here on earth. She always had a kind word for everyone. Mary touched many lives and was loved by all! She will truly be missed.

Mary graduated from Cleburne High School in 1932 and graduated with a B.A. from N.T.S.T.C. in 1937 and a M.A. from N.T.S.T.C. in 1950. She did post-graduate work at the University of Houston in Houston, L.S.U. in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Monterrey Tech in Monterrey, Mexico. She came to Victoria in 1950 to teach English and Spanish at Victoria College and taught there for 35 years. She was chairman of the department for 20 years.

Mary married Dr. Jack Leslie Doughtie, Sr. in 1937. During his Army career they lived in Miami, Denver and San Antonio. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Victoria since 1950. She was also a life member of the College Council of Teachers of English, and America Association of University Women. She served on the Board of the Victoria Ballet Theatre for several years and as a VIP at First United Methodist for many years.

Mary is survived by her daughter-in-law, Judy Doughtie; grandchildren, Diane Herbold (Nic), Gay Gilleland (Tommy), Kerry “Bo” Hanselka, Jr. (Kim), Kevin Hanselka (Deborah) and Nicole Howe (Britt); great-grandchildren, Lindsey Mackaron (Russell), Taylor Schroller, Paytyn Herbold, Elizabeth Hanselka, Madelyn and Kendall Howe; great-great-grandson, Luke Mackaron.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband Jack Leslie Doughtie, Sr., her son, Jack Leslie Doughtie, Jr. and her grandson Troy Bryant Doughtie.

Thank you to the wonderful nurses at Detar Hospital and Hospice. A special thank you to her caregivers Pauline, Alice, LaShandra, Sandra and Ernestina and her dear friend, Angel Dubose, for being by her side.

The family will be honoring Mary’s wishes with a private service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church, Victoria College or Victoria Ballet Theatre.
