1929 ~ 2016

Evelyn May McCumber Gleinser, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother has left this world to be re-united with her husband of sixty-two years, Leo J. Gleinser, Sr., daughter Catherine Anne Gleinser, parents John Austin and Agnes Clara McCumber, sisters Ann McCumber, Maxine Dippel and Margaret Fiore, and brother John McCumber.

Evelyn was born the second child in a family of ten siblings in Mt. Lucas, Live Oak County, Texas on May 20, 1929. She attended St. Joseph’s school in Beeville, Texas, and graduated from Woodsboro High School in 1946. She completed her education at Draughn Business School in San Antonio, Texas.

Evelyn began her career as a telephone operator in Refugio, and after business school, worked for Union Producing in Beeville, while caring for her five younger siblings after her mother died. It was in Beeville where she met Leo on a blind date, and they were married after he completed his tour of duty in the US Army stationed in Germany. Evelyn worked for the Chief Geologist at Texaco, in Houston, Texas, while bringing four children into the world and Leo attained his degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Houston. Evelyn served the United States Postal Service and was named Goliad Rotary Club’s "Employee of the Year" in 1972. She was Postmaster in Weesatche, Texas, until her retirement in1988.

Evelyn's proudest contribution to the community was as longtime leader of Girl Scout Troop 288 and included a trip to Washington, D.C., and Disney World with her husband and beloved scouts. Evelyn and Leo were instrumental in the organization of the Goliad County Emergency Services Department and she donated countless hours of her time as a volunteer EMT.

Evelyn was an outstanding homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed reading, sewing, china painting, gardening and baking with a particular gift for making wonderful chocolate and lemon pies and an exceptional peach cobbler - a skill not lost on her many nieces and nephews.

Evelyn is survived by her children; Mary Theresa Gleinser, Leo J. Gleinser, Jr. (Judith), Chris Gleinser (Deborah). She leaves behind three wonderful grandsons; Matthew Gleinser (Melissa), Andrew Gleinser Jonathon Gleinser; great-grandchild, Matthew; and Melissa's son, Mason Alyn. Her surviving siblings include sisters; Agnes Clara Lytle, Betty Long, brothers; Garner McCumber, Franklin Clayton McCumber (Evelyn Marie), and Michael Thomas McCumber (Margie); sister-in-law Joyce (Mrs. John) McCumber.

Evelyn was a devout Roman Catholic and her life will be remembered on Friday, September 16th with visitation starting at 5:00 PM and Rosary recited at 7:00 PM, at the Grace Funeral Home in Goliad. Funeral Mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church in Goliad on Saturday, September 17th, at 10:30 AM.

Memorials may be made in Evelyn’s name to Goliad Pet Adoption, Goliad County Library, Goliad Education Foundation, or donor’s choice.
